Objectives

Maximising the Impact of the MSCA Programme

IANUS is dedicated to enhancing the strategic impact of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) — the EU’s flagship programme for doctoral education and postdoctoral training.

As part of Horizon Europe, the world’s largest research and innovation funding framework (€95.5 billion, 2021–2027), MSCA accounts for €6.6 billion in support of excellent research, researcher mobility, and interdisciplinary career development.

Building on this strong foundation, IANUS seeks to unlock further untapped potential in three key areas:

Capacity building

advancing training, skills, and career development opportunities for researchers

Intersectoral cooperation

strengthening collaboration between academia, industry, and the public sector, and enhancing the use of research results

Synergies with EU Missions

harnessing MSCA’s contribution to addressing major societal challenges through alignment with EU Missions

A Data-Driven, Participatory Approach

To develop forward-looking policy recommendations, IANUS follows a multi-step research and consultation process:

Portfolio analysis

of all MSCA-funded projects (2014–present), identifying thematic clusters, trends, and links to EU Missions.

Survey and case studies

on selected projects in the areas of Cancer and Smart Cities, uncovering best practices and systemic challenges.

Agent-based modelling

to simulate the impact of potential programme changes and explore new policy pathways.

Stakeholder engagement

including MSCA beneficiaries, alumni, industry partners, academia, and policymakers, through a series of policy development workshops.

Through this comprehensive approach, IANUS aims to co-create actionable recommendations that will help shape the future of the MSCA and increase its contribution to Europe’s research, innovation, and societal goals.
